The IBS Research Appeal is the fund raising arm of the IBS Research Programme run at the Central Middlesex Hospital NHS Trust. The IBS Research Programme does not receive any public funding or public grants and therefore relies on the support it receives from private donations and the sale of its own publications. The problem we find in trying to raise funds for IBS research is that the subject matter is not attractive. In fact it is even difficult to persuade journalists to write about it - diarrhoea, constipation, gas, belly ache, urgency and soiling are hardly light reading at the breakfast table - although as we know, millions have to put up with these problems daily. We come across many tragic cases in the course of our work and hear about difficult circumstances in the hundreds of letters sent to us (regrettably which we are unable to answer because of the dangers of diagnosing a problem without access to the full medical history and situation).

Our work is about studying, recording, assessing and then treating those who come to our clinic. We share our findings with other centres of excellence and by also talking to drug companies, we are able to guide them in the directions our findings suggest will be successful for IBS sufferers. What we have reconfirmed time and time again in the seven years our programme has been running so far, is that while some symptoms appear in the main forms of IBS, no two cases are alike - and therefore there is no single shot panacea for the millions and millions throughout the world who suffer from this distressing illness.

But, some of the current research is very encouraging and its results, when translated into clinically tested and accepted remedies, will go a long way towards helping many sufferers. The need for research, however, is on-going and if you would like to support our work by making a direct contribution however large or small, there is a donations facility below, and we are very grateful for all donations received.
